PM to open 50MW army power plant tomorrow
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to inaugurate a 50MW rental power plant tomorrow, set up by the Bangladesh Army at its Pagla Camp in Narayanganj district.
DPA Power Generation International, a company floated by the Bangladesh Army, installed the plant under a government crash programme.
The government undertook the programme to resolve the nagging power crisis through setting up fast-track power plants by the private sector.
DPA Power Generation International is a joint initiative of the army-run Bangladesh Diesel Plant, Primordial Energy Ltd and Germany-based Aggretech AG.
The state-owned Power Development Board (PDB) last year signed a huge number of agreements with private sponsors to set up rental power plants having a total capacity of about 2000 MW.
But so far, only a few of them could come into operation while most remained under process of installation.
The Bangladesh Army's diesel-run plant came into operation on November 15 of last year, after signing a contract with the PDB in July 15.
However, the plant's commercial operation started on November 24 last year. Now, the prime minister will formally inaugurate the plant.
As per the contract, the PDB will purchase electricity from the plant for the next three years at a rate of Tk 13.96 per kilowatt hour (per unit).
The PDB officials believe the plant would play a good role in meeting electricity demand at some areas in Narayanganj, and also in the capital.
