Julian to make the tail wag
Fielding coach Julian Fountain is eager to influence Tigers' lower-order batsmen into making a difference with the bat in the shorter version of the game.
Ever since the camp for the Zimbabwe series began on November 1, specialist bowlers Shafiul Islam, Rubel Hossain, Shahadat Hossain, etc have been kept busy with batting lessons. And Fountain has been at the forefront to make sure their averages and strike-rates go up and they begin to make substantial contribution to the Tigers total.
"We want to make sure that all of our players contribute in as many areas as possible. So, for example, if the lower-order can contribute 20 or 25, it makes a difference," said Fountain.
"Those 25 runs will bring us level with the big teams and we will beat big teams by sneaking little 25 here, save 25 in the field. It's all about getting as much benefit from as much areas as possible."
Apart from Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, none of the lower-order batsmen have made more than 100 runs in one-day cricket this year. The second highest is Abdur Razzak, who has 71 runs from eleven innings. Worse, Mashrafe is the only player who has a strike-rate of over 80 (Shahadat's 100 strike-rate is only from three games).
This area, lower-order batting, has genuinely hurt the Tigers in a number of matches, mainly resulting in the loss of a lot of wickets in the final Powerplay and giving away advantageous positions.
"If the lower-order between them can contribute 40 or 45 runs, it will make a big difference.
"So, what we are trying to do is make sure they have good techniques, stay calm and execute the simple skills in the right situation. They are our bowling unit, the lower-order, and they are bowlers who will score runs," explained the effervescent Fountain.
"Whether they are batting together as bowlers or batting with a batsman at the other end, they know what they need to achieve," he added.
