A Dhaka court yesterday rejected bails of 19 Jamaat-e-Islami men, including a former lawmaker, and sent them to jail in connection with a case filed on charges of possessing explosives and bomb making materials.
Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Nazrul Islam passed the order after Sub-Inspector Abu Shahed Khan of Mirpur police, also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, produced them before it on completion of their three-day remand.
The arrestees include former Jamaat lawmaker Mujibur Rahman, Jamaat Mirpur thana (west) unit Ameer Mahfuzur Rahman, thana unit member Kazirul Islam, Khulna city unit nayeb-e-ameer Shafiqul Alam, Sramik Kalyan Federation Publicity Secretary SA Abdul Hai, city unit leader Abdul Karim, ATM Rahim Uddin, Ahsan Ullah Patwari, Abdullah Al Noman, Rubel Mridha, Hemayet Uddin, Monirul Islam, Yasin Ali, Nazmul Hossain, Ruhul Amin, Moazzem Hossain, Idris and Moazzem Hossain.
In the yesterday's forwarding report, Abu Shahed said information derived from them is being verified. Moreover, the government is starting a process for filing a sedition case against them on charges of planning some subversive activities to destabilise the country. So, they should be confined to jail until the investigation of the case completes, the IO said.
Police arrested them on Thursday from a residence in the city's Mirpur area and recovered some explosives, bomb making materials and leaflets from their possession.
