BDR mutiny trial begins in C'nawabganj today

A special court of Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) in Chapainawabganj will begin trial of 30 accused jawans in connection with the case of 39 Rifles Battalion mutiny today.
Lt Col Yahia Azam, sector commander of Rajshahi BDR, will lead the court at 39 Rifles Battalion headquarters. The other members are Lt Col Khalid Hossain and Major Touhidul Islam.
All the 30 jawans are now in jail.
BDR sources said the accused jawans revolted to express their solidarity with the mutineers of BDR headquarters (Pilkhana) at 39 Rifle Battalion on February 26 last year.
They looted the armury of the battalion violating discipline of the force. Rebel jawans also took control of battalion headquarters and put up barricades on Chapainawabgagnj-Rajshahi road at Sultanganj in the district, they added.
Ahsanul Haque, then officer-in-charge of Chapainawabganj Police Station, filed the case against 30 jawans in connection with the mutiny on May 17 last year.
Deputy Attorney General advocate Shashanka Shekhar Sarkar will aid the court as a representative of attorney general with two lawyers.
Lt Colonel Zayeed Hossain, commanding officer of 39 Rifle Battalion, will act as the prosecutor.
