Ibrahim 'Killing'

Cops finally move to sue lawmaker Shaon

Shaon

Detective Branch of police is preparing to file an arms case against ruling party lawmaker Nurunnabi Chowdhury Shaon.
DB police ascertained that the bullet, which caused the death of Awami League activist Ibrahim Ahmed, was not a stray one rather someone else fired it.
They yesterday arrested lawmaker Shaon's driver Kamal Hossain Kala as suspected killer and summoned Shaon's personal secretary Sohel, Shimul and Delwar for interrogation.
Kala will be produced before a Dhaka Court today and the DB will seek directives from the court to convert the unnatural death case to a murder case.
On August 13, some people left Ibrahim at Dhaka Medical College Hospital with a gunshot wound to his head.
Following the death of Ibrahim, Kala filed an unnatural death case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
According to the case statement, Ibrahim was sitting in the lawmaker's car parked near the parliament building. When he was handling Shaon's gun, it went off at one stage and killed him.
Five days after the incident, Ibrahim's younger brother Masum Ahmed filed a murder case with a Dhaka court accusing Shaon, his driver Kala and 15 others.
A DB high official, preferring anonymity, told The Daily Star that according to the post-mortem report and the information gleaned from driver Kala and several others, they became sure that someone else fired the bullet to kill Ibrahim.
There are inconsistencies between the statements of Kala and others made during interrogation. Even Shaon acted mysteriously as he did not immediately report the incident to police or Ibrahim's family members rather he asked his driver Kala to file an unnatural death case, the official said.
The investigators said they had information that Shaon made several attempts to negotiate a settlement with Ibrahim's family by paying compensation.
The DB official said as the behaviour of Shaon became mysterious following the killing, they were trying to find out whether he had any link to the incident.
According to the post-mortem report, the bullet went through Ibrahim's face and into his neck, he said, adding that a stray bullet usually cannot hit a person in this way.
The investigators said that they gleaned some important information regarding the murder but for the shake of investigation, they are not willing to disclose anything.
A licensed pistol should not be left in such a manner that someone could reach it easily and use it. Such type of activity is a violation of arms act, they added.
