CNG Auto-Rickshaw Linked Crimes

CMP collecting finger prints of drivers

Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) on Wednesday started taking finger prints of CNG-run auto-rickshaw drivers in a bid to reduce crimes linked to auto-rickshaws in the city.
Sources in the CMP said criminals often use the three-wheelers for crimes like smuggling and drug peddling. Snatchers, locally known as members of tana party, malam party and marich party also find it as an easy mode of transport, they said.
A section of so called drivers are also involved in auto-rickshaw related crimes keeping the owners in the dark, they said.
“We started collecting finger prints of auto-rickshaw drivers, auto-rickshaw registration numbers and related information of around 30,000 drivers to check the crimes committed with the help of the drivers”, said CMP Deputy Commissioner (north) Banaj Kumar Majumder while inaugurating a function at Buddhist Temple intersection yesterday afternoon.
Banaj said through these information the law enforcers would be able to bring the 'part-time' and non-professional drivers, who run the vehicles only for committing crimes, to book.
A software has been developed to identify the drivers using the information, said the DC (north) adding that the finger-print collection would continue for a few days our
Meanwhile Customs officials on Wednesday seized huge consignment of second-hand photocopiers, printers and fax-machines at Chittagong port.
Euro Asia of Chittagong imported the items including 91 photocopiers, 19 printers and 15 fax-machines from Singapore under false declaration of new ones in July, said the sources at Chittagong Customs House.
Officials of Customs Audit Investigation and Research (AIR) seized the consignment following scrutiny yesterday, they said.
