Takir Hossain finds much happiness in a biography

Hamiduzzaman Khan - A Modern Sculptor
Edited by Akhtar Jahan Ivy,
Haradhan Dhar

Hamiduzzaman Khan A Modern Sculptor is a biographical work. Such kinds of publications are rare in our country. The paper quality is quite up to the standard and the printing is superb. The book has been admirably edited. It is certainly a matter of great satisfaction that such a book has been published in our country.
Eminent art critic Nazrul Islam's worthy article has added a different aesthetic dimension to the book. Nazrul Islam has tried to depict the significant chapters of Hamiduzzaman Khan's life and achievements in his piece. From the sculptor's childhood to his present, all the moments come up in the book gradually and present a lively and intimate look at the man.
The book is a collector's delight. There is a lot of variety in the book. The pictures are bright and the captions help the readers to know about the background to them. On reading the book, you can easily get a clear conception about this maestro and his contribution to contemporary sculpture in our country. He has tried to bring all his important works to light in the book. One need hardly say that Hamiduzzaman Khan is one of the pre-eminent modern sculptors in our country and naturally already holds a distinguished position in our sub-continent.
Hamiduzzaman Khan was born in 1946 in Kishoreganj. He completed his matriculation in 1962 and came to Dhaka for admission at the East Pakistan College of Arts and Crafts. Zainul Abedin, then the principal of this institute, was his teacher and it was from him that Hamiduzzaman Khan learnt the nuances of art.
There are lots of eminent places in our country where Hamiduzzaman Khan's brilliant sculptures are on display and the book has captured most of the works' colourful photographs. Most discerning critics rate his work very highly. Form is his priority and as a result most of his works are form-oriented. Hamiduzzaman Khan is the only sculptor in our country whose works have been exhibited at Olympic Park and Sancheong Sculpture Park in Korea. His work is also on display at the World Bank offices in Washington D.C.
Hamiduzzaman is a versatile and dedicated artist. He has also tried his hands at painting. His water colours are thought provoking and reflect the workings of a mature mind.
A few years ago, Hamiduzzaman planned to publish the book after he had been overseas and had met foreign artists. It was especially when he visited Korea that he felt the need for a book that would introduce others to the kind of work which he had done in Bangladesh. This book not only depicts Hamiduzzaman's works but essentially also focuses on our culture and heritage. Many foreigners, often at sea about our art and culture, cannot but find this work revealing.
