Matlub Anam passes away
Matlub Anam, a language movement veteran and columnist, passed away at the city's Square Hospital yesterday.
He was 77. He had been suffering from cancer.
Matlub Anam was the third son of renowned litterateur and politician late Abul Mansur Ahmad.
He is survived by wife Ferdous Anam, three sons Ahmad Murshed Anam (Architect), Ahmad Mushfique Anam (Electrical Engineer) and Ahmad Mursel Anam (Physician) and three daughters-in-law and four grand children.
He also left behind his two brothers Manzur Anam and Mahfuz Anam, editor and publisher of The Daily Star, and a host of relatives, friends and well-wishers.
His elder brother late Mahbub Anam, also a language movement veteran, was the editor of The Bangladesh Times.
His namaz-e-janaza will be held after Zohr prayers at Dhanmondi Eidgah Mosque today.
Matlub Anam was born at Dhanikhola village of Trishal upazila in Mymensingh on December 25, 1933. He studied in Kolkata Alia Madrasa [English medium] and came to Mymensingh after birth of Pakistan. He went to Japan in 1957 to study dentistry.
He was jailed for taking part in the historic language movement in 1952.
As a student, he was active in many social and extra-curricular activities. He also used to bring out a magazine 'Azan'.
In his coulourful professional career, Matlub Anam served at different renowned multinational pharmaceutical companies including Pfizer, Searle, SK&F and Social Marketing Company (SMC).
He went into retirement after serving as the managing director of Ganoshasthya Pharmaceuticals.
Matlub Anam used to write regular columns in different national newspapers on contemporary issues.
Few months before his demise, his book styled "Politics of One-eleven" was published.
