'Evicted for not supporting Jamaat'

Railway employees allege

Families of seven class four employees, who were evicted from their houses on an unused land of Bangladesh Railway's West Zone, have alleged that a group of pro-Jamaat officers and employees evicted them for not supporting their organisation.
"We were evicted from the railway's unused land without any notice on November 18 as we are not involved with Jamaat-backed organisation 'Bangladesh Sramik Kalyan Federation," they said at a press conference at Rajshahi Metropolitan Press Club yesterday.
"We at least 25 families have been living on the unused land of Bangladesh Railway's West Zone for the last 12 years. On November 18, a group of railway officers and engineers led by Bangladesh Railway's Pakshi department assets officer, also federation president, Abul Kalam Azad illegally evicted only seven families out of 25 families living on the land," goes a written statement read out by Nayab Ali, a class four employee of Rajshahi railway.
"During the eviction, we requested federation president, secretary and engineers for discussing the chief engineer of railway but they ignored our request. They also destroyed our houses, furniture and other things."
A group of railway officers and federation members led by federation general secretary Abul Basar, federation member Muhammad Hafiz, Rezaul and Ainal Haque also illegally grabbed two acre unused land of the railway and cultivated crops and fish there, the evicted employees said.
They urged the caretaker government and railway authorities for their rehabilitation on the same land.
When contacted, federation General Secretary Abul Basar said it was a matter of Rajshahi railway office and the allegation of eviction is not true.
