Treatment of Salam Pintu

HC asks govt to explain

The High Court yesterday issued a rule upon the government to explain why contempt proceedings should not be drawn against them on charge of not complying with its orders for arranging treatment for detained former BNP deputy minister Abdus Salam Pintu.
The High Court bench of Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husain and Justice Md Rais Uddin also directed four government high officials including the home secretary to appear before it on December 13 in connection with a contempt of court petition filed by Pintu.
The three other officials are deputy commissioner of Dhaka, inspector general (IG) of prisons and jailer of Dhaka Central Jail.
On December 7, Pintu filed the petition with the High Court stating that this court on October 13 and 24 in separate orders directed the four government officials to arrange proper treatment for him (Pintu), who is now in jail in connection with the August 21 grenade attack case.
The officials ignored the High Court orders by not taking any step to arrange treatment for him and it is similar to contempt of court, the petition said.
After holding hearing on the petition, the court yesterday passed the order.
Advocate Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, assisted by advocate Gazi Kamrul Islam Sajal appeared for the petitioner while Deputy Attorney General AKM Zahid Sarwar Kajal stood for the government.
