Film on Nehru, Lady Mountbatten shelved

The proposed film delves into the alleged love affair between Jawaharlal Nehru and Edwina Mountbatten.

The makers of a proposed feature film on the alleged love affair between India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Edwina Mountbatten, the wife of British India's last Viceroy Lord Mountbatten, has been shelved following differences with Indian government over depiction of some intimate scenes.
The Information and Broadcasting Ministry of India wanted the producers of the film “Indian Summer” to delete certain intimate scenes involving the characters of Nehru and Edwina from the script submitted for clearance before it is shot in India.
The director of the proposed film Joe Wright is reported to have said that the producers wanted to make it a “love” film and did not agree to the Indian government's suggestions.
Hollywood actors Hugh Grant was to have played the role of Lord Mountbatten and Cate Blanchett that of Edwina. There was no official word on who would have appeared the role of Nehru in the movie, which the producers had earlier claimed to be on the Partition of the Indian sub-continent.
However, sources in Indian Information and Broadcasting Ministry say the producers of the film have conveyed to it that the proposed film was being shelved for the time being due to budgetary constraints.
They said the ministry had cleared the shoot of the film on condition that certain intimate scenes between Nehru and Edwina be diluted.
Under Indian rules, a foreign film needs permission for its shoot in India and requires to adhere to the script cleared by the government.
The relationship between Nehru and Edwina has since long been in public domain as a number of books and articles have been written on the subject but the government of India was worried over certain scenes in the script of the film.
