Mysterious Explosion

Kalim Khan succumbs to injuries

Kalim A Khan, son of late BNP minister AM Zahiruddin Khan, who sustained burn injuries in a mysterious explosion on August 16 at his Gulshan residence, died at Singapore General Hospital yesterday.
Kalim, 32, also the son-in-law of Concord Group Chairman SM Kamaluddin, was first admitted to Apollo Hospitals with around 65 percent of his body burnt.
His wife Nusrat Khanam, 25, and Ramzan Ali, 35, a rickshaw-puller, were also injured in the explosion.
His first namaz-e-janaza will be held on Sunday at 10:30am at Azad Mosque in Gulshan and the second janaza will be held after Juma prayers at Jumat-ul-Fala mosque at Dampara in Chittagong.
Talking to The Daily Star, Officer-In-Charge Kamal Uddin of Gulshan Police Station confirmed that Kalim had passed away in Singapore at around 8:30am local time.
Anup Sarkar, marketing general manager of Concord Group, said, "The condition of Kalim was worsening while he was at Apollo Hospitals. On August 17, he was sent to Singapore for better treatment."
Earlier, Kalim's elder brother Sazzad Khan told the law enforcers quoting his brother that the explosion happened as soon as Kalim lit a gas lighter for smoking.
Witnesses said almost all the glasses of the duplex building were broken and all the furniture became twisted. One of the walls collapsed while the rest along with the roof got cracked.
Sanwar Hossain, assistant commissioner of Explosives Incident Countermeasures under DB, told The Daily Star, "Accumulated gas might have caused the blast. We are yet to recover any explosive from the spot."
