Criminals stabbed a Jubo Dal leader to death on Wednesday night at Khaskhanda near Phulhata Bazar under Baharbunia union of Morelganj upazila.
The deceased was identified as Afzal Hossain, 45, vice president of the union unit Jubo Dal and son of Kajol Khan of Betibunia village in the upazila.
According to Rezaul Karim, younger brother of the deceased, a gang hit Afzal with sharp weapons at about 8:00pm while he was returning home from Phulhata Bazar on foot.
The gang left seriously injured Afzal by the road and fled the scene.
Locals later rescued him in a pool of blood and took him to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
Dr. Mushfiqur Rahman of the hospital said, Afzal had died on the spot. There were several marks of injuries on his body, he said.
Rezaul could not say any possible reason for attack on Afzal. Officer in-charge of Morelganj PS Azizul Haque said they launched a drive to arrest the killers and were investigating the reason for murder.
Meanwhile, police recovered the body of a youth from a shrimp enclosure of Jiudhara village under Nishanbaria union in the upazila yesterday morning.
Riyadh Kazi, 25, of Tarabunia village was probably strangled, said police, adding that he might have been killed by rival shrimp traders.
