Parliament yesterday passed a new law aiming to continue the ongoing socio-economic development activities in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) region.
State Minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Bir Bahadur piloted a bill titled "The Chittagong Hill Tracts Development Board Bill 2014”, which was passed by voice votes.
The bill will replace “The Chittagong Hill Tracts Development Board Ordinance” promulgated in 1976.
The Chittagong Hill Tracts Development Board will now set up its office in Rangamati.
There will be a 6-memmebr committee with a chairman and a vice-chairman under the board.
The government will appoint its chairman, preferably from tribal community, as per the terms and conditions of the board.
The vice-chairman will enjoy the status of joint secretary, while the members of the board will have the status of deputy secretary.
