Mass inoculation drive: 10 injured at Savar centre during chaos

At least 10 vaccine seekers were injured after being chased at by law enforcers at the Bangladesh Health Management Institute vaccination centre in Savar during the countrywide mass vaccination campaign today, according to the witnesses.
"Today's situation is tough to handle and that's why we sought help from police and Rapid Action Battalion," said Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer of Savar Dr Sayemul Huda.
People became sick due to the huge crowds rushing at the centre, our Savar correspondent reports quoting the official.
The vaccines are being given at 20 centres in Savar, where around 40 lakh people reside. But the BHMI centre saw the maximum crowd today, health officials said.
When asked, one of the vaccine seekers said people were not properly informed about the centres. Most locals came to the centre since they do not know about other ones.
Local authorities however gave an announcement about the centres through loudspeakers.
Health workers, police and Rab members have become exhausted to deal with the overcrowding situation.
Many were seen returning without taking vaccines after failing to enter the centre.
