Govt to confirm jobs of 6 additional judges

Services of six additional judges of the High Court might be confirmed this week as the chief justice has initiated a process in this regard.
Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain might make recommendations to the government within a few days for regularising the additional HC judges, said Supreme Court sources.
Law Minister Anisul Huq discussed the issue with the chief justice at a judicial conference on May 29 at the SC auditorium.
The following day, the law minister told this newspaper that his office will take necessary steps to confirm the jobs of the six HC judges immediately after receiving recommendations from the chief justice.
The judges are Justice Ashish Ranjan Das, Justice Mahmudul Hoque, Justice Md Badruzzaman, Justice Zafar Ahmed, Justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo and Justice ABM Altaf Hossain.
Earlier last month, the chief justice collected 10 judgments delivered by each of the six additional HC judges for evaluating their performance.
Sources said the CJ and other judges at the Appellate Division of the SC have scrutinised the judgments.
The process of confirmation might be completed before Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina leaves for China on June 6 on a five-day visit.
Services of the six additional judges were supposed to be confirmed before June 13 as they were appointed on June 13, 2012 for two years, SC Registrar AKM Shamsul Islam told The Daily Star.
The then president Zillur Rahman had appointed the six additional judges to the HC. The president confirms the services of additional HC judges on the basis of the CJ's suggestions.
The CJ's recommendations are sent to the law ministry. The ministry then sends the suggestions to the Prime Minister's Office to forward those to the president.
The last Awami League-led grand alliance government (2009-2013) had appointed 60 judges to the HC, which has 90 judges now, including the six at two war crimes tribunals.
