Expel errant party men

Awami League President Sheikh Hasina yesterday ordered making a list of errant and controversial leaders and activists and expelling them from the party, insiders said.
She expressed annoyance over the rifts and divisions between leaders of different units and asked the party men to resolve the internal conflicts, or to dissolve the committees concerned.
Hasina, also the prime minister, gave the directives at AL's Parliamentary Board meeting at the Gono Bhaban yesterday.
The subject of internal feud was brought up when the meeting participants were discussing a conflict between the president and general secretary of Faridpur AL and the selection of an AL nominee for the Cumilla-5 by-polls.
It was decided in the meeting that the AL nominee for Cumilla-5 will be Abul Hashem Khan.
Hashem Khan, president of Burichang AL and former president of Cumilla Bar Association, got the AL ticket to run for Burichong upazila chairman in 2019. But Aklakh Haider, now general secretary of Burichong upazila AL, defeated him.
The AL also picked Aga Khan Mintu, president of Shah Ali AL, as the nominee for Dhaka-14, and Habibur Rahman, member of Sylhet district AL, for Sylhet-3.
A total of 94 aspirants collected nomination papers to get AL tickets for the three constituencies. Of them, 34 nomination papers were sold for Dhaka-14, 25 for Sylhet-3, and 35 for Cumilla-5.
The by-polls are slated for July 28.
The three parliamentary seats became vacant due to the deaths of the MPs. Sylhet-3 MP Mahmud Us Samad died on March 11, Dhaka-14 MP Aslamul Haque breathed his last on April 4 and Comilla-5 MP Abdul Matin Khasru died on April 14.
When the feud between Faridpur AL President Subal Saha and General Secretary Syed Masud Hosen was discussed and Hasina learnt that two separate committees were proposed for Faridpur, she ordered dismissing both the committees, the sources added.
She asked the central leaders to sit with Faridpur AL president and general secretary to resolve the conflict. If need be, the two leaders should be summoned to Dhaka.
She also suggested taking action in line with the party constitution against any leader unwilling to resolve in-party disputes.
She also told the AL leaders that the country will get more coronavirus vaccines soon and asked them to be cautious about the coronavirus, but not to panic.
