Ex-minister Sardar Amjad passes away

Former minister Sardar Amjad Hossain died of heart ailments at Apollo Hospital in Dhaka this afternoon. He was 75.
He breathed his last at 3:00pm at the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) of the hospital, his son Saniat Hossain told The Daily Star Online.
Amjad Hossain was admitted to the hospital after he suffered a heart attack at his Gulshan residence on Tuesday, Saniat added.
A renowned politician of Rajshahi, Amjad served as a minister for agriculture, food, land, fisheries and livestock during the tenure of HM Ershad. He also became a presidium member of the Jatiya Party.
But, he returned to Awami League on June 1, 2005.
In 1970, Amjad was first elected as a parliament member on AL ticket. Since his boyhood, he was involved in the politics of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL). Sardar Amjad was a top leader while studying at Rajshahi University. At that time he was elected GS of RUCSU as a BCL candidate in 1965-66.
Before he joined JP in the year 1986 he had been the publicity secretary of AL central committee. He had also been chosen as the organising secretary of Baksal in 1975 under the leadership of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
No sooner had he joined JP he became minister and presidium member of the party. Following the resignation of Ershad he played a vital role in the movement for release of Ershad.
Amjad was born at Hamirkutsa village in Bagmara upazila on January 1, 1940.
