BMD issues lightning alert for parts of Dhaka, surrounding districts

Rain or thunderstorms accompanied by gusty wind -- with speeds of 45 to 60 kilometres per hour or more -- are likely to occur in parts of Dhaka, Gazipur, Narayanganj, Narsingdi, Kishoreganj, Brahmanbaria, and Habiganj districts between 10:50am and 2:00pm today.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has advised residents of these areas to take necessary precautions.

In case of multiple thunderclaps, people have been cautioned to stay indoors for at least 30 minutes after the last sound of thunder, according to a lightning alert issued by the Met office today.

The alert instructed residents to stay indoors during lightning "roars", keep windows and doors closed, avoid travel if possible, not to take shelter under trees, not to lie or lean against concrete floors and walls, to unplug electrical/electronic devices, to immediately get out of water bodies, to keep away from any object that conducts electricity, and to refrain from going outside when a hail starts.
