Prime Video has officially greenlit "Carrie", a television series based on Stephen King's acclaimed novel. The series will be spearheaded by Mike Flanagan—known for "The Fall of the House of Usher" and "Midnight Mass"—who will serve as writer, executive producer, and showrunner, while also directing a number of episodes.

The project has progressed swiftly, with Flanagan initiating a writers' room in late autumn. The eight-episode series has begun casting quietly, with rising talent Summer H Howell in negotiations to take on the titular role of Carrie White. Siena Agudong has been cast as her on-screen adversary, Sue Snell.

Described as a reimagining, "Carrie" will follow the life of high-school misfit Carrie White, who has grown up in seclusion under the rigid control of her domineering mother. Following the sudden death of her father, Carrie is thrust into the challenges of high school life, caught in a web of bullying, while simultaneously discovering her mysterious telekinetic abilities.

The series is being produced under the banner of Amazon MGM Studios.

"'Carrie' is an iconic story that has withstood the test of time with continued cultural relevance," stated Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon MGM Studios.

"With Mike Flanagan at the helm, and the experienced team including executive producer Trevor Macy, this provocative series is certain to captivate our global audiences."

This series marks one of several MGM film properties currently being developed for television by Prime Video, following Amazon's acquisition of MGM.

Other titles in development include "Legally Blonde", "Tomb Raider", "Poltergeist", and "Barber Shop".

The original 1976 film adaptation of "Carrie" was directed by Brian De Palma and starred Sissy Spacek in the lead role.

A 2013 remake featured Chloë Grace Moretz in the titular role.
