John Lithgow is reportedly in final negotiations to take on the iconic role of Albus Dumbledore in HBO's much-anticipated adaptation of JK Rowling's "Harry Potter" books.

According to Variety, insiders have confirmed Lithgow as a strong contender for the beloved Hogwarts headmaster, although HBO is remaining tight-lipped. The network commented, "We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumour and speculation. As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalise deals."

Albus Dumbledore, a wise and powerful wizard, serves as the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, mentoring Harry Potter in his battle against the dark wizard Voldemort. In the original film series, the role was first played by Richard Harris in the initial two movies, followed by Michael Gambon after Harris' passing.

John Lithgow, a highly respected actor, has been a prominent figure in film and television for decades. He's known for his roles in movies like "The World According to Garp", "Terms of Endearment", and "Footloose", as well as TV series such as "3rd Rock from the Sun", "Dexter", and "The Crown". More recently, he appeared in FX's "The Old Man" and Focus Features' "Conclave".

Rumours also suggest that Paapa Essiedu is a frontrunner to play potions professor Severus Snape, while newcomers are expected to fill the roles of Harry, Hermione, and Ron. Warner Bros has already conducted an open casting call for young actors aged 9 to 11, seeking to introduce fresh faces to the franchise.

HBO has described its "Harry Potter" series as "a faithful adaptation" that will bring a "new cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail and much-loved characters 'Harry Potter' fans have loved for over 25 years."

Planned to run for a decade, the series aims to reach new audiences while the original films, released between 2001 and 2011, "remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch globally."
