‘Artistes live through their creations’: Uzzal on his birthday

Today marks the 78th birthday of veteran actor Uzzal, regarded as a megastar in Bangladeshi cinema. He made his film debut in 1970 with "Binimoy", opposite Kabori, and went on to enjoy a highly successful career spanning over a hundred films, excelling not only as an actor but also as a producer and director.
Speaking to The Daily Star, Uzzal shared, "Since last night, I have been overwhelmed by people's love. I have received countless greetings throughout the day. I also appeared as a guest on a television programme. My family members celebrated with a cake-cutting ceremony at midnight, and again today. Close friends and family are gathering this evening as well."
Reflecting on the significance of this birthday, Uzzal said, "This birthday has been truly memorable. I am deeply moved — it is unforgettable. I am grateful to everyone — friends, well-wishers, journalists, and my family. Even members of the Dhaka University Alumni Association reached out to me."
"This time, I celebrated my birthday openly and joyfully. After a long time, I truly enjoyed such a celebration," he added.
Throughout his illustrious career, Uzzal starred in numerous acclaimed films, including "Arunodaye Agnisakkhi", "Nasib", "Nalis", "Usila", "Lalon Fakir", "Kancher Swarga", "Samadhan", "Swikriti", "Duti Mon Duti Asha", "Paye Cholar Poth", "Shonibarer Chithi", "Goromil", "Samadhi", "Onubhob", "Rupali Soikote", "Fakir Majnu Shah", "Jonota Express", "Mahesh Khalir Banke", "Nijere Haraye Khuji", "Birangana Sokhina", "Opobad" and "Banglar Mukh", among others.
Regarding television channels airing his films and songs to commemorate his birthday, the actor remarked, "I take it very positively. When a film touches people's hearts, it remains timeless. No matter how many years pass, audiences continue to cherish it."
He added, "Artistes achieve immortality through their work. It is through our creations that we live on. Our golden era films will endure in the hearts of audiences — they will not fade away. This is how artistes continue to be loved even after their passing."
Asked about the greatest achievement of his long career, Uzzal responded, "The love I have received from people — that is my greatest achievement. Be it from family, friends, acquaintances, or audiences — their affection has enriched my life beyond measure."
As a leading actor, Uzzal shared the screen with celebrated actresses such as Shabana, Kabori, Babita, Rozina, Sujata, and Suchorita. Reflecting on his early days, he recalled, "In 1970, while I was studying at Dhaka University, the late Subhash Dutta cast me as the lead in 'Binimoy' opposite Kabori. After that, I had the opportunity to work alongside Shabana, Babita, and many others."
When asked about his closest friendships in the industry, he paused briefly before saying, "There were many dear friends, though sadly many are no longer with us. Actor Alamgir remains a very close friend. We share a wonderful bond, often meeting at each other's homes or offices and speaking almost daily. This friendship is very special to me."
On whether he believes the lost glory of Dhaka's cinema will return, Uzzal said, "I am an optimist. With more cinema halls and a greater number of quality films, the golden days of our cinema can indeed return."
