Tarua stages anti-war drama ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ at Shilpakala

Dhaka-based troupe Tarua brings the harrowing realities of war to the stage with their latest production, "All Quiet on the Western Front", at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy today, at 7pm.
Directed by Bakar Bakul and adapted for the stage by Runa Kanchan, the play is based on Erich Maria Remarque's seminal anti-war novel. Subsequent performances are scheduled for Thursday at 7pm and Friday at 4pm and 7pm.

This marks Tarua's fourth major production since their inception in 2018 with "Let Me Out". The play explores the psychological and physical toll of World War I, tracing the journey of young soldiers as they are transformed from patriotic youths into disillusioned veterans.
The narrative centres on Paul Bäumer, a student turned soldier, who, along with his classmates, is persuaded by their teacher Kantorek to enlist in the German army.
Initially fueled by nationalistic fervour, they soon confront the grim realities of trench warfare. The story poignantly captures their internal struggles, shattered dreams, and the overarching question: Who truly benefits from war?

Bakar Bakul emphasises the play's relevance in today's context, stating, "Despite the devastating impacts of two world wars, the world continues to flirt with conflict. This production aims to shed light on the horrors of war and the importance of peace."
The cast features Kumar Uday, Tamim Ahmed, Ripon Ghosh, Zubayer Mahmud, Jibon, Arnob, Tarek, Sunny, Sakya, Kaiyum, Abhijit, Farhad, Arpita, and Munni, among others.
