‘Helen Keller’ to take the spotlight at Shilpakala for Rabindra Jayanti

The theatre troupe Swapnadal is bringing one of its most acclaimed productions, "Helen Keller", back to the stage — a performance that transcends borders, time, and physical limitations — on the 164th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, tomorrow.
Directed by Zahid Repon and written by Apurba Kumar Kundu, "Helen Keller" will be staged at 7pm at the Studio Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA). The monodrama, featuring a riveting solo performance by Juana Sobnom, tells the story of the deaf-blind American legend whose life became a global symbol of resilience and hope.

Swapnadal's "Helen Keller" goes deeper than the familiar narrative of perseverance. It reveals the fascinating, often overlooked connection between Helen Keller and Rabindranath Tagore — exploring how the poet-philosopher's ideas of human dignity, empathy, and universalism profoundly impacted Keller's worldview. In doing so, the play not only celebrates Keller's extraordinary triumphs but also spotlights the subtle ways Eastern thought influenced Western history.

Against a minimalist stage design, Sobnom embodies Keller with a delicate yet fierce intensity, charting her journey from isolation to international acclaim. Through Keller's story, the production examines broader questions of struggle, identity, and the silent forces that shape a human soul.

"Helen Keller" is no stranger to accolades. The production has already crossed national borders, earning praise at international theatre festivals in Japan and India, where its emotionally charged narrative struck a universal chord.
