A long-overdue honour: Ferdous Wahid on Azam Khan’s posthumous Independence Award

Pop legend Azam Khan is set to receive the Independence Award, sparking widespread discussion. The decision to honour the legendary musician and Freedom Fighter has been met with applause from people of all walks of life.
Azam Khan's close friend and fellow musician, Ferdous Wahid, expressed delight upon hearing the news. An overjoyed Ferdous spoke to The Daily Star over the phone and said, "Azam Khan was my dearest friend, my closest companion. He truly deserves the Independence Award. In fact, he should have received it long ago."
"Had Azam Khan received this award during his lifetime, he would have been extremely happy. We, his friends, would have been able to share the joy alongside him as well. I am nonetheless genuinely happy; my heart is full. I am proud of my friend Azam Khan," he further added.
Ferdous Wahid also remarked, "Azam Khan was not just a celebrated singer; he was a valiant Freedom Fighter who made a significant contribution to the country. I sincerely thank the authorities for recognising him."
Azam Khan had previously been honoured with the Ekushey Padak. Addressing this, Ferdous Wahid said, "I know that Azam Khan received the Ekushey Padak. Now, he is being awarded the Independence Award. This is a commendable decision. He truly deserves this recognition."
The musician recalled, "I first met Azam Khan after the Liberation War through Firoz Sai. Our bond deepened over time. We spent countless hours exploring Dhaka on rickshaws. He often used to say, 'Look, I was a guerrilla fighter.'"
"When Azam Khan passed away, I was in Canada. The last time we spoke was while I was still there. We talked a lot over the phone. His final words to me were, 'Come back, my friend. The field is empty. The field is empty—come back.' Even now, those words echo in my ears. He also said, 'You are sensitive, but come back. Keep singing.'"
Ferdous Wahid concluded, "We have so many memories stemming from so many stories. I miss him. One by one, my friends have left for the hereafter. I have grown old as well. But I feel immense pride for my friend Azam Khan. He was truly due for the Independence Award."
