Salil Chowdhury—composer, lyricist, poet, playwright, and a staunch Leftist—was more than a musical genius. His influence spanned across music, literature, and activism, earning him universal acclaim. Even the legendary Jaikishen referred to him as "The Genius," reflecting his unparalleled mastery over music and words.

As the world marks his 99th birth anniversary, his daughter, Antara Chowdhury, reflects on his monumental contributions with pride and purpose. "I was born to preserve my father's legacy," she shares, deeply committed to ensuring his work endures for generations.

Antara's dream is to create a museum dedicated to her father within the next decade. "I want future generations to connect with him—through his songs, writings, even his pens and glasses," she says, envisioning a space where people can appreciate both his artistry and his personal story.

While Salil was revered for his artistic genius, at home, he was a grounded father, always approachable and family-oriented. "He was a great storyteller, whether sharing ghost stories or engaging in heated political debates," Antara recalls. Despite his busy career, he made time for simple, tender moments with his family, like making fruit salads and nurturing their artistic interests.

Antara fondly remembers the warmth of her father's love. "When I was unwell, he would stroke my head. That comfort stays with me to this day." Growing up under the shadow of such a legendary figure wasn't without its challenges, especially in the world of music. "Dad insisted that I learn both Indian and Western classical music properly. He always said, 'To be a good artist, you must understand harmony and chords,'" she recalls, a lesson that shaped her own musical journey.

Yet, it wasn't just his teachings that influenced Antara—it was the personal moments that defined their bond. From childhood squabbles over who would sit on his lap to her first adult song recording, Salil's guidance was both firm and loving. "He was always precise in his feedback. He wanted me to understand the essence of music," she reflects.

Outside the studio, Salil was full of humour and life. "He once convinced us he had trapped a ghost in a whiskey bottle!" Antara laughs. "He had a playful spirit, even during solo performances, joking that he was 'nineteen steps close' to becoming Bismillah Khan."

Though Salil didn't celebrate his birthdays with much fanfare, Antara's mother ensured they were special. "Mom would invite musicians to our home, and the house would be filled with music and laughter," she recalls. "Dad even cooked for everyone himself."

In later years, their bond evolved into a cherished friendship. "We would talk for hours. He loved science and math, and we'd discuss everything under the sun. I miss those conversations the most," Antara says.

Antara carries forward one of her father's core teachings: "To be a good artist, you must first be a good human being. Rise above the small stuff and focus on what really matters."

With the centenary of Salil Chowdhury's birth approaching, Antara is more determined than ever to preserve his legacy. "I've established the Salil Chowdhury Birth Centenary Society, where his music and writings will be safeguarded," she affirms. "I wasn't just born to sing. I was born to protect my father's work. His music is my life's devotion."
