SP Park, built at Hazraghat in the town after removing a den of drug addicts and criminals, was inaugurated yesterday.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Haque inaugurated the park as the chief guest.

Nari Police Kalyan Sangstha President Shamsunnahar Rahman, Tangail Deputy Commissioner Khan Mohammad Nurul Amin, DIG of Dhaka Range Shafiqul Islam, SP Mahbub Alam, Tangail Municipality Mayor Jamilur Rahman Miron and district Awami League President Fazlur Rahman Faruque attended the programme.

Laser show, fireworks and cultural function were arranged on the occasion. 

After sunset, locals did not dare to walk past the area for fear of mugging, while rickshaw pullers and auto-rickshaw drivers refused to take passengers there.

The district administration conducted drives in September last year to remove illegal structures on the banks of the Louhajang river, but the land grabbers returned.

The SP then decided to put his foot down and make a permanent change by turning the area into a park.
