A court here yesterday sentenced seven people to imprisonment for life for killing a local Krishak League leader in 2010.

The court also fined them Tk I lakh each, to be paid within 30 days, in default to serve one more year in jail.

The amount would be given to Shahida Khatun, wife of the victim.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Md Rustom Ali pronounced the verdict.

The convicts, Md Ekram Hossain, Tozir Uddin, Md Jibon Hossain, Md Akkas Ali, Md Amzad Hossain, Md Askan Sheikh and Md Abu Jafar hail from Nawdapara in Maligasa union under Sadar upazila.

According to the case statement, the convicts, armed with local weapons, hacked Tofazzal Hossain, president of ward No 7 unit of Krishak League, on October 3 in 2010 as the victim often protested their criminal activities.

Victim's son Md Abdul Malek filed a case with Pabna Police Station on the day, accusing the convicts. Police submitted the charge sheet on May 12 in 2011.

Ekram Hossain and Akkas Ali were also awarded five more years imprisonment under Section 325, Additional Public Prosecutor advocate Shahjahan Ali Khan said.
