President Abdul Hamid has rejected mercy petition of Capt Abdul Majed, a death row convict in a case filed over the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family members, Law Minister Anisul Huq told The Daily Star today.

"Now, the home ministry and jail authorities will decide when they will execute Majed," the law minister said.

Before execution, Majed's relatives can meet him as per relevant laws, he said.

District and Sessions Judge's Court of Dhaka issued a death warrant for Majed, who was arrested from Mirpur in Dhaka on Tuesday.

Majed yesterday filed a mercy petition to the president, seeking clemency.

The Supreme Court on November 19, 2009, upheld the death sentences of Abdul Majed and 11 other self-confessed killers of Bangabandhu. Of them, five were executed on January 27, 2010.

Six other convicts including Abdul Majed remained at large.

Another condemned killer died in Zimbabwe in June, 2001.
