Food minister: ‘Govt won’t take responsibility for smugglers’ deaths at border’

Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Mazumder today said the government will not take responsibility for anyone who dies at the border while trespassing into India to smuggle cattle.
The minister was speaking three days after three Bangladeshi nationals were shot dead by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) on January 22 at Porsha border area, which is under Sadhan’s electoral constituency.
The minister made the remark while he was talking to reporters after attending the diamond jubilee programme of Damkurahaat High School in Rajshahi’s Paba upazila as the chief guest.
“Actually, if our own character is not good, we should not blame anyone else,” he said.
Steps are being taken to bring back the bodies of the deceased Bangladeshi nationals, he added.
“Upazila, district and BGB authorities have prepared a resolution in this regard. From now on, if anyone gets killed while trying to trespass across the fences to smuggle cattle into the country, the government will not take responsibility for their deaths,” the minister said.
