Nagorik Samaj, a platform of civil society members, has called an eight-hour hartal in Companyganj upazila of Noakhali from 6:00am tomorrow in protest against remarks made on Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader's family.

The platform also demanded the cancellation of the district AL committee and expulsion of Ekramul Karim Chowdhury, Awami League lawmaker from Noakhali-4, reports our local correspondent.

Obaidul Quader's younger brother Abdul Quader Mirza, also the mayor-elect of Basurhat municipality, made the announcement at Bashurhat Bangabandhu Chattar in Companyganj this morning.

The upazila unit of Awami League expressed its solidarity with the hartal, said Khijir Hayat Khan, president of Companyganj upazila unit of AL.

Talking to our correspondent, Quader Mirza said the shutdown -- from 6am to 2pm -- was called in protest of MP Ekramul Karim Chowdhury's remarks about the family of Obaidul Quader.

He said they would continue protests until MP Ekramul was expelled from the party and the district Awami League committee was canceled.

Meanwhile, Companyganj upazila freedom fighters in a press conference this morning condemned and protested Ekramul's remarks.

While speaking on Facebook Live from his verified Facebook account around midnight on Thursday, MP Ekramul Karim Chowdhury claimed that Obaidul Quader belongs to a razakar's family.

The video, however, was removed from his Facebook account within a few minutes. But it had gone viral on social media.
