Miscreants in Kumarkhali upazila of Kushtia have vandalised the sculpture of revolutionary freedom fighter against British rule in India, Jatindranath Mukherjee, popularly known as Bagha Jatin.

The sculpture situated in Kaya village is thought to have been vandalised sometime last night and locals noticed the damage caused to its face this morning, reports our local correspondent quoting police.

Police are conducting drives to find people responsible for the damage, said Jahurul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kumarkhali Police Station.

The sculpture was inaugurated in 2016 in Kaya College by the then governor of India's Tripura, Tathagata Ray.

Jatin was born in 1879 in the current Jhenidah district. He grew up in Kaya village in Kushtia at his maternal grandfather's home.

Bagha Jatin died in 1915 at the age of 35 after being wounded and captured during a gunfight with British police.
