The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) this afternoon filed a case against Jubo Mohila League's suspended leader Shamima Nur Papia and her husband Mofizur Rahman Sumon for amassing about Tk 6.24 crore illegally.

ACC's Deputy Director Shahin Ara Momtaz filed the case against them, ACC's Public Relations Officer Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya said.

According to the case statement, Papia paid over Tk 3.23 crore cash for service between October 12, 2019 and February 22, 2020 to the Westin hotel.

During this period, she paid the money for 25 rooms including presidential and chairman suits, restaurant, spa, laundry and bar service.

She also spent Tk 40 lakh for shopping. Between April 2015 and April 2020, Papia paid Tk 30 lakh for house rent and invested another Tk 1.2 crore in business.

Besides, another Tk 30.52 lakh was found in Papia and her husband's account.

During a raid on February 23, Rab recovered another Tk 58.41 lakh from her house. Papia's husband Mohfiz owns a sedan worth about Tk 22 lakh.

"They could not show any legal source of income against the wealth and expenditure," reads the statement.

"It appears they've amassed the wealth beyond the known source of income," it added.

RAB GRANTED 5-DAY REMAND FOR PAPIA, HER HUSBAND 

A Dhaka court today allowed Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) to take Papia and her husband Mofizur Rahman on a five-day remand each in a drug case.

Metropolitan Magistrate Md Didar Hussain passed the order after Md Khorshed Alam, a sub-inspector of Rab and the investigation officer of the case, submitted a petition seeking permission to quiz the couple.

The IO said another Dhaka court on March 11 placed the couple on a five-day remand in a case filed over possessing five bottles of foreign-made liquor. But they could not interrogate them due to coronavirus pandemic and they had to be quizzed urgently now, the IO said.

Rab-1 arrested Papia, her husband -- a former Chhatra League leader -- and their two accomplices from Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on February 22 when they were trying to leave the country.

Papia is accused of forcing women and girls into prostitution. She was expelled from the post of general secretary of Jubo Mohila League's Narsingdi district unit.
