31 Bhola Jubo Dal, JCD men sent to jail

A Bhola court yesterday sent 31 Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal men to jail in the cases for vandalising and torching vehicles in the district town during the countrywide blockade programme enforced by the BNP-led 20-party alliance.

District Jubo Dal President Earul Alam Liton, Jubo Dal central committee member and former president of the district unit of Chhatra Dal Abdul Kader Selim, Organising Secretary of Chhatra Dal district unit Nezamul Alam Jihad, and Bhola Municipality Ward councillor and local Jubo Dal leader Bashir Ahmed are among the accused.

They appeared before the Court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Chowdhury Md Mahbubur Rahaman, seeking bail. After a hearing, the magistrate rejected their bail petition and sent them to jail.

Three cases were filed against the leaders and activists of the two associate bodies of BNP with Sadar Police Station on January 4, 18 and 20 this year for vandalising and torching vehicles.

Meanwhile, police arrested district BNP Organising Secretary Enamul Haque yesterday in connection with a case for torching and vandalising vehicles in the town during the blockade programme.

Harunur Rashid, officer-in-charge of the district Detective Branch of Police, said the detectives arrested the BNP leader from court area around 3:00pm. He was later produced in a court that sent him to jail, the OC added.

Our Rangpur correspondent reported that police on Monday night arrested a charge sheeted accused in the case for arson attack on a passenger bus that left six people killed in Jaygirhat area under Mithapukur upazial of the district on January 13 this year.

The arrestee is Md Shafayat Hossain, 26, president of Mithapukur upazila unit of Islami Chhatra Shibir.

Md Humayun Kabir, officer in charge of Mithapukur Police Station, said Shafayat is one of the charge sheeted accused in the arson case.

Police later produced Shafayat in a court that sent him to jail.
