Mayeen Uddin Khan Badal, a freedom fighter and lawmaker of Chattogram constituemcy-8 (Boakhali-Chandgaon), passed away at a hospital in India early today at the age of 67.

The executive president of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) breathed his last at Narayana Institute of Cardiac Sciences around 5:00am (Bangladesh time), his media coordinator Alam Didar told The Daily Star.

He was admitted to Narayana Institute of Cardiac Sciences on October 18 with heart disease, Didar said adding that his body will be brought back home tomorrow.

Badal, hailing from Boalkhali upazila, is survived by his wife, three sons and a daughter.

He was elected MP three times from Chattogram-8 constituency since 2008. He had a reputation as a great orator in the House.

Expressing sorrow over the death, Awami Leader and former minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain said Badal actively took part in the Liberation War from Chattogram.

He was born on February 21 in 1952.

President, PM mourn the death of Badal

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of veteran politician and parliament member Badal and also recalled with profound respect the contributions of Badal to politics, BSS adds.

The nation has lost a devoted politician in his death, the president and PM said in separate messages issued today.

They also prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved family.
