10 hurt as Barapukuria miners, villagers clash with coalmine officials

At least 10 people including a policeman were injured as agitating miners and villagers clashed with the officials of Barapukuria Coal Mining Company Ltd (BCMCL) in Parbatipur upazila of Dinajpur this morning.
Six of the injured were admitted to Phulbari Upazila Health Complex, reports our Dinajpur correspondent quoting Habibul Haque Prodhan, officer-in-charge of Parbatipur Police Station.
Earlier, the miners and villagers affected by land subsidence placed 13-point and six point demand to the authorities of the coal mine that were not met, leading to the villagers and miners jointly calling an indefinite strike on Sunday.
Among the 13-point demand, miners sought to enjoy government holidays and also demanded their arrear, reports our correspondent.
Meanwhile, the villagers sought for quick repair of roads that were affected due to land subsidence and to compensate those who were affected around the coal-mining area.
Staff members of BCMCL led by General Manager (Admin) Masudur Rahman Howladar allegedly attacked the agitating miners and villagers in front of the entrance of the mining gate with sticks, leaving 3 agitating miners injured around 9:00am today, Rabidul Islam president of BCMCL miners and workers union alleged.
Later, the miners launched a counterattack leaving four people including a policeman injured, the OC added.
A large number of law enforcers were deployed in the area to keep the situation under control.
