Almost every anime lover knows about this much acclaimed anime. So before starting the main review there is a special note. This review is actually for those people who never watched anime, think it's stupid and childish, or for those anime lovers who are shounen anime freak.
The story starts in “Clannad” (season 1) with a so called delinquent high school student Okazaki Tomoya. His mother died when he was a kid and he has a bad relationship with his father. Not having anyone or anything precious in his life, he hates his life and the small city. One morning while walking to his school he meets a sweet and timid, soft spoken girl named Nagisa Furukawa, repeating her school year due to illness. Later he meets her several times in school. Nagisa shares her dream of organising the now-disbanded theatre club and performing in the school festival but she has very low self-esteem. Tomoya along with his friends Sunohara, the Fubayashi twins, Kotomi and Tomoyo come forward to help her. While they face many problems the story progresses and many more things appear rather than it being only about the theatre club.
The second season -- “Clannad After Story” -- continues where the first season left off and it shows the afterlife of the characters. Trying to tell the story will only end up spoiling it. All I can say is it doesn't end with making them an official couple like other anime. It features Tomoya and Nagisa's childhood till the time they both become adults.
While focusing on Tomoya and Nagisa, the characters' life stories also appear one after another. The main theme of the anime is family. How a child feels worthless and meaningless without a family or in a broken family. When that happens, we fall into despair and frustration. Finding a person you can communicate with can add meaning to your life. Protecting our loved ones is the reason we live. And the most important thing is understanding the value of having family and friends. This is what you will realise from it. There are many beautiful quotes among the dialogues and the background music suits the mood and emotions.
If you are an emo who cries for others' sorrows easily, then take a tissue box while watching it! It will surely touch your heart, even if you are not that emotional.
