A police official was closed on Thursday night following an allegation of torturing his second wife in Kawnia area of Barisal city.

He was sent to Barisal Police Lines following the order issued by Barisal Metropolitan Police Commissioner Shoibal Kanti Chowdhury based on a written complaint from the victim, said BMP Deputy Commissioner Zillur Rahman.

Sub-inspector Md Abdul Warres, 40, of Kawnia Police Station locks the door keeping his spouse Habiba Aktar Marufa inside the house before going to office on a regular basis, alleged Marufa while talking to The Daily Star.

Due to assault on Marufa, she once was hospitalised, she said.

On information from neighbours and Marufa's mother Mahmuda Bagum, Bangladesh Women Lawyers Association, Barisal unit, informed police of the matter.

Later, a team from Kawnia Police Station rescued the victim, said Officer-in-Charge Selim Reza.

Denying the allegations, SI Warres said he locked the door for safety and security.

The allegations were raised to defame him, the SI added.
