RMG workers block road over arrears

Workers of a readymade garment factory in Savar yesterday demonstrated and blocked a road for four hours, demanding arrears.

Around 400 workers of Q-Point Fashion Ltd in Hemayetpur Rishipara area blocked Hemayetpur-Shingair road around 8am, said workers and locals.

Parvin Akhter, a worker at the factory, said factory authorities usually pay previous month's full salary by the 20th of next month. As they paid partial salary of January on February 25, workers demonstrated demanding arrears, she added.

"I was given Tk 4,000 out of about Tk 12,000. It's hard for us to maintain our family if we do not get paid on time and properly," said Parvin.

Kabir Hossain, a Savar-based workers' leader, said they were talking to the authorities to resolve the issue.

Contacted, Helal Uddin Bhuiyan, senior assistant superintendent of Dhaka Industrial Police-1, said on last Thursday, the factory authorities paid the workers 35 percent of the salary for January and assured them of paying the rest on March 10.

"The workers did not agree with it and staged demonstration. We later dispersed them from the road. A discussion is going on amid factory authorities, workers and their leaders to settle the matter," he added.

This correspondent could not get in touch with factory authorities as the meeting was still ongoing at the time of filing this report at 5pm.
