Four former Biman officials jailed for corruption

A Dhaka court yesterday jailed four former officials of Biman Bangladesh Airlines for different terms for misappropriating Tk 28.58 lakh around 19 years ago.

Manager of salary section Mohammad Zinnah, accounts superintendent of the section Harunur Rashid and accounts superintendent Mir Abu Sayeed Taifuddin Chowdhury were sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment while assistant manager of cash and banking MA Rob was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment.

Harun is still at large while the rest were present during yesterday’s judgment in the corruption case.

Zinnah, Harun and Taifuddin were also fined Tk 25 lakh each, in default of which they will have to suffer one more year in jail while Rob was fined Tk 15 lakh, in default of which he will have to serve another year.

Judge Shaikh Nazmul Alam of the Special Judge Court-4 of Dhaka delivered the judgement.

The court cancelled bails of Zinnah, Harun and Taifuddin and sent them to prison to serve the jail terms.

The punishment of the fugitive will be effective from the day of his arrest or surrender, the judge said in the judgement.

After cross-examination of all 14 prosecution witnesses, the judge pronounced the judgment.

According to the prosecution, the convicts, in collusion with others, made forged bills and vouchers between July 2001 and June 2002, withdrew over Tk 28.58 lakh, and misappropriated it.

Later on September 5, 2010, the Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case with Airport Police Station against them.

After investigation, the ACC pressed charges against them on January 28, 2016.
