Firefighters doused a blaze after it broke out at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) dedicated for Covid-19 patients in the second floor of Dhaka Medical College Hospital's (DMCH) new building.

The fire broke out around 8:10am and caused dense smoke inside the ICU. Three units of firefighters rushed to the spot and doused the blaze around 8:55am, said Kamrul Hasan, duty officer at Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters.

A total of 14 patients were rescued from the ICU facility, none of them were injured, the official also said.

The cause of the fire could not be known immediately, he added.

Brig Gen Md Nazmul Haque, director of DMCH, confirmed the incident to The Daily Star.
