Ex-lawmaker Nurul Alam Chy dies

Nurul Alam Chowdhury, former lawmaker and president of Chattogram (north) district unit Awami League, passed away yesterday at a hospital in the port city. He was 73.

The freedom fighter was suffering from old-age complications, said Abdus Salam, general secretary of Chattogram (north) district unit AL.

He left behind his wife, two sons and a daughter to mourn his death.

Nurul Alam was elected lawmaker from Chattogram-2 in 1973 and 1986. In 1996, he became director of Rupali Bank and in 2010, he was appointed Bangladesh ambassador to Oman.

Nurul's first namaz-e-janaza will be held today at 10am and the second one will take place at Fatikchhari College ground after Zohr prayers. He will be buried with state honour after a third janaza in Fatikchhari.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader, in separate messages mourned the death of the AL leader.
