The Supreme Court today asked the BGMEA authorities to give an undertaking saying that they would not seek more time to relocate their 15-storey building constructed illegally at Begunbari and Hatirjheel Lake in Dhaka.

It will pass order on the time-petition filed by BGMEA after the authorities give the undertaking, said the four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Muhammad Hossain.

The Apex Court was scheduled to pass an order today on the petition recently submitted by the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) seeking one-year time for demolishing the BGMEA building.

The court will not pass order today, the bench said.

Barrister Imtiaz Moinul Islam, a lawyer for BGMEA, told The Daily Star that they informed today’s Supreme Court order to the BGMEA authorities.

The authorities will now decide when they would give the undertaking to the Supreme Court.

The BGMEA has already started constructing its new office complex as the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) has allocated land in the capital's Uttara, Barrister Imtiaz said citing the petition earlier.

However, it needs one more year to relocate its office, he added.
