Case filed over stampede death at qulkhwani

An unnatural death suit has been filed over yesterday’s incident of 10 persons dying in a stampede at the qulkhwani of former Chittagong city mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury.
Arun Das, brother of a deceased, filed the case with Chawkbazar Police Station in port city, our local staff correspondent reports quoting Nurul Huda, the station’s officer-in-charge.
Meanwhile, the local administration has suspended all functions at Rima Convention Centre, said Jahangir Alam, assistant commissioner (Kotwali zone) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police.
Apart from the dead, about 40 others were injured at the venue, one of the 11 centres where the qulkhwani was arranged. The function at Rima was exclusively arranged for the Hindu community.
The incident occurred as hundreds scrambled for food at the entrance to Rima Convention Centre in the port city's Askar Dighir Par area. The entrance was narrow and the crowd was huge, witnesses said.
