As some people with ill intent keep on grabbing the Jail Canal in Barisal city, Barisal district administration on Monday led an eviction drive in the area and gave them a 24-hour ultimatum to get the structures they erected on its both sides removed.

Md Eliasur Rahaman, executive magistrate and assistant commissioner (land), led the operation with Deputy Commoner of Barisal Dr Gazi Md Saifuzzaman and Chief Executive Officer of Barisal City Corporation Ranjit Kumar present.

The mobile court evicted some of the illegal shops including Rony enterprise at Fakir Bari point of the canal and raised red flags barring the grabbers from further grabbing.

Over 100 people occupied a good portion of the canal, and among those are businessmen and political leaders, said locals.

If the grabbers do not get their establishments removed within the stipulated time, we will demolish and evict the establishments, said Eliasur.
