Trade resumes through Benapole port after 8 days

Trade through Benapole land port resumed this morning after an eight-day closure due to Eid-ul-Fitr and weekly holidays.
Import-export activities between Bangladesh and India had remained suspended from March 28 to April 4. However, passenger movement between the two countries continued as usual during this period.
Aminul Haque, vice-president of the Benapole Port Import-Exporters Association, said although import-export activities resumed today, no goods were delivered from the port.
However, port and customs operations are expected to fully resume tomorrow.
According to customs officials, the government lost approximately Tk 120 crore in revenue due to the suspension of cross-border trade over the last eight days.
Mamun Kabir Tarafdar, deputy director (traffic) of Benapole Port, said around 2,000 workers have joined the port to help with unloading goods.
He also said thousands of trucks loaded with goods are waiting to enter Benapole port from the Indian side. Since morning, 70 trucks carrying Indian goods have entered the port.
"All concerned have been instructed to unload goods quickly to ease congestion at the port," he added.
Port and customs activities are expected to return to normal from tomorrow, with operations likely to intensify in the coming days.
Security at the port had been tightened during the Eid holidays to prevent any untoward incidents or acts of sabotage.
