Stocks gain for second day

The benchmark index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange edged up 0.17 percent to 5,205.23 points

Stocks gained for the second consecutive session today as investor sentiment improved following a 90-day suspension of fresh US tariffs on most countries.

The relief, however, was tempered by rising trade tensions between the United States and China after Washington slapped a 125 percent duty on Chinese imports.

Before rebounding yesterday, the domestic market had been on a downward trajectory since last Wednesday, when the initial tariff announcement triggered global retaliations and shook investor confidence.

The DSEX, the benchmark index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), edged up 9.18 points, or 0.17 percent, to close at 5,205.23.

The Shariah-compliant DSES index rose 0.27 percent to end at 1,172.95, while the DS30, comprising blue-chip stocks, advanced 0.30 percent to 1,927.90.

Turnover at the DSE hit Tk 540.16 crore, up from Tk 527.18 crore in the previous session, reflecting a slight uptick in investor activity.

Out of the 395 issues traded, 149 advanced, 168 declined, and 78 remained unchanged.

Eastern Cables was the day's top gainer, surging 9 percent, while FAS Finance & Investment registered the sharpest loss, falling 5 percent.
