Stocks fall after brief recovery

Stocks fell today after rebounding from a nine-day losing streak yesterday.
The DSEX, the benchmark index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), dropped 42.67 points, or 0.85 percent, to close at 4,952.79.
The DSES index, which tracks the Shariah-compliant stocks, declined 1 percent to 1,096.87, while the DS30, which represents blue-chip stocks, lost 1.16 percent to settle at 1,830.82.
Turnover, an important indicator of market activity, increased 34 percent to Tk 453.79 crore.
Of the 395 issues traded, 94 advanced, 246 declined, and 59 remained unchanged.
Emerald Oil Industries emerged as the day's top gainer, surging 9 percent, while shares of Progressive Life Insurance Co fell by 10 percent to become the day's biggest loser.
Meanwhile, the CSE All Share Price Index at the Chittagong Stock Exchange slipped 0.10 percent to close at 13,845.87.
