The district administration yesterday fixed retail price of loose soybean oil at Tk 160 per litre across Chattogram district.

The decision came at a meeting organised by Chattogram District Administration at Chattogram Circuit House and made effective from the same day. It will remain effective till April 10.

Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Shahadat Hossain was present as chief guest in the meeting, chaired by Farida Khanam, deputy commissioner of Chattogram.

Senior officials from businesses including TK and City Group, importers of edible oil, trader leaders from Khatunganj wholesale market, and representatives of consumer organisations were also present.

"From today [Tuesday], loose soybean oil will be sold retail at Tk 160 per litre. Action will be taken if complaints are received against anyone selling at a higher price," Shahadat said.

On Monday, the CCC mayor and Chattogram DC visited Khatunganj, the country's largest wholesale market of daily essentials, amid the ongoing supply crisis of bottled soybean oil.
Later, they called the meeting with oil producers, importers and traders yesterday.

The price was fixed based on everyone's opinions at the meeting, said sources.

As per decision, importers will sell open soybean oil at Tk 153, dealers at Tk 155 and retailers at Tk 160 per litre. This will come into effect from Tuesday.

Mayor Shahadat also said besides the district administration, CCC will also monitor the markets and steps will be taken against traders selling loose soybean oil at higher prices.

A special task force is being formed to monitor and take legal steps against those who would be found not complying with the decision, said Farida Khanam.
