AK Azad, one of the country's top exporters and managing director of Ha-Meem Group, today urged Bangladesh Bank (BB) to allow the country's currency exchange rate to be determined by the market.  

He was speaking at a dialogue titled "Global Financial Trends & Reforms: Implications for Bangladesh", organised by the International Chamber of Commerce at The Westin Dhaka. 

Addressing BB Deputy Governor Zakir Hossain Chowdhury, Azad said, "If you want to support exporters and improve forex reserves, then you should open the exchange rate to the market, as suggested by the IMF (International Monetary Fund)."  

He also called on business leaders to share information with government about the current economic situation, particularly the impact of US President Donald Trump's tariffs.  

The central bank is currently managing the foreign exchange rate, despite the IMF's recommendation to let market forces determine it. The interbank exchange rate has remained at Tk 122 per US dollar for the past few months.
